In a surprise announcement at the Association of British Orchestras’ (ABO) annual conference hosted at Bristol Beacon, Chief Executive of the venue Louise Mitchell was awarded the prestigious ABO Award for her remarkable contributions to UK orchestral music.
This recognition follows the recent £132 million, five year transformation of Bristol Beacon, solidifying it as an international standard concert venue and music education centre. Mitchell, previously the director of Glasgow’s concert halls, has been instrumental in two major cultural capital projects, including the challenging redevelopment of Colston Hall into Bristol Beacon.
The newly transformed venue, now home to Paraorchestra, opened to rave reviews with over 20,000 visitors during its debut weekend in December. Its orchestral program for 2024 promises performances by renowned national and international orchestras.
Mitchell’s leadership extends beyond Bristol Beacon, as she has played key roles in various musical organisations, serving as chair of the National Children’s Orchestra and trustee with Paraorchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Society.
Jonathan Dimbleby, Chair of Bristol Beacon, praised Mitchell as an “outstanding cultural leader,” and ABO Chair Sophie Lewis highlighted her profound impact on the UK’s cultural landscape. Mitchell, in response to the award, expressed pride in sharing it with the entire Beacon team. She recently announced stepping down in July, marking the completion of Bristol Beacon’s transformation and paving the way for new leadership.
