Have old laptop? Donate to tackle digital exclusion

By Safiya Bashir  Wednesday Jun 30, 2021

A new project has been launched by Bristol City of Sanctuary in partnership with local charity DigiLocal to help provide laptops to those seeking sanctuary here across the city.

The project aims to combat the digital divide within the city, which has been hugely exacerbated during the pandemic as more and more people are expected to study and work from home.

Already, the projects has seen laptops donated to organisations such as IMPACT Bristol, which works with refugees and non-EU migrants connect with their communities, North Bristol Advice Centre, an independent community advice and support organisation based in Lockleaze, and Bristol Somali Resource Centre in Barton Hill, which has helped to distribute the technology.

Better Business
Better Business is an initiative launched by Bristol24/7 to help businesses thrive, whilst creating a positive impact on Bristol and the people who live here.

“The laptops, generously donated by businesses, individuals, and other organisations, are to be given to youth, young adults and those in education,” said Isobel Day from the Bristol City of Sanctuary.

“Recipients will be from a refugee or asylum-seeking background. The laptops will make such a difference, giving people the tools they need to stay connected and access learning materials, online classes and support services. They will help parents further support their children’s learning and allow those in education to do their homework at home.”

DigiLocal works with communities to run tech clubs for young people

“So far, the project has seen the coming together of various Bristol charities to work together to ensure its success.”

DigiLocal can accept any working laptop with a power cable that is in good condition, except Apple laptops such as Macbook Pro. The project doesn’t include desktops, tablets, or any other items.

If you want to contribute and have a laptop to donate, or multiple then please contact Bristol City of Sanctuary at bristol@cityofsanctuary.org
