International Women’s Day: Inspiring Inclusion across Bristol and beyond
International Women’s Day on March 8 carries the theme #InspireInclusion this year, emphasising the importance of fostering a world that values and understands women’s inclusion for a more equitable society.
In 2024, the persistence of gender inequality remains perplexing. Charity provider Pregnant Then Screwed reports a significant decrease in childcare places and providers over the last two years, highlighting the staggering disparity between part time working women and men. The desire for women, particularly mothers, to balance multiple roles is palpable, but as discussed on the Pregnant Then Screwed podcast, the physical impossibility of achieving it all is evident.
Recent reports indicate a regression in the UK’s gender pay gap, requiring a staggering $360 billion, according to UN Women, to achieve global gender parity. The realisation that an 18 year old may never witness gender equality due to slow progress raises concerns.
In preparation for International Women’s Day, empowering female business owners and entrepreneurs in Bristol shared insights on inspiring inclusion. Charmaine Vincent, CEO of Baltimore Consulting, acknowledges the unconventional path to her success, emphasising unwavering self belief despite encountering adversity and challenges.
Amy Kington, co-founder of Community of Purpose CIC, recounts experiences challenging gender stereotypes in her role at The Football Association. Similarly, executive and leadership coach Sally Powell reflects on early career instances that motivated her to establish the women’s leadership program “IMPACT” to empower women in their careers.
The resilience, determination, and self belief exhibited by these women serve as a beacon for the next generation. Visibility and representation are key, according to Keri Andriana, CEO of Amschela, who emphasises showcasing success stories to inspire young women in challenging norms.
Taking action for gender parity is crucial for businesses. Charmaine, a signatory for the Bristol Women in Business Charter, believes creating and maintaining a gender balanced workforce accelerates change for women and the younger generation. The charter, supported by 41 signatories, aims to recognise and assist businesses in Bristol progressing toward gender equality.
Celebrating women’s achievements and inspiring inclusion year round, along with ongoing investments in women, is essential. The call for change echoes, emphasising the need for a faster pace of progress. As the world celebrates International Women’s Day, the rallying cry remains: here’s to strong women, knowing them, being them, and raising them – because having it all is not a mere aspiration but a necessity.
