Primary schools showcase engineering talent at Badminton School challenge
15 primary schools recently showcased their engineering prowess at Badminton School on Wednesday April 17 as part of their engineering challenge. The task? Installing a model wind turbine using custom designed cranes constructed from K’Nex.
Prior to the competition, participating students had delved into the expansive world of engineering, exploring its diversity and its potential to combat climate change. These budding engineers, winners from preliminary heats in their respective schools, exhibited teamwork and innovative design skills, crafting a delightful array of crane designs.
STEMworks, a firm bridging industry and education through STEM workshops, sponsored the event. This initiative aims to equip children with practical engineering skills and understanding. Plans are underway to involve more schools in the challenge come 2025. Burrington C of E Primary emerged victorious from the challenge, although the competition was stiff, with numerous outstanding ideas on display.
Christopher Beer, a physics teacher at the school, expressed delight in hosting the K’nex Challenge final, emphasising the collaboration with STEMworks to introduce students to the myriad opportunities in the STEM sector. The event not only engaged students in hands-on engineering but also exposed them to inspiring engineers, igniting considerations of engineering as a future career path.
Chloe, a student in the upper sixth, recounted the excitement of conducting a science outreach demonstration featuring liquid nitrogen. She enjoyed presenting and imparting valuable scientific skills to a primary school aged audience, hoping to inspire them to explore the captivating world of STEM.
