Renishaw host STEM insight day to engage BAME students

By Bristol24/7  Tuesday May 7, 2024

Global engineering company Renishaw has joined forces with the Bristol Future Talent Partnership (BFTP) to organise a STEM insight day, aimed at motivating students from black and minority ethnic backgrounds to explore opportunities in engineering careers. The event, tailored for year 12 and 13 students, offered an immersive experience at Renishaw’s facilities, featuring hands-on activities and an introduction to various STEM related roles.

Participants got involved in a series of engaging sessions, including workshops on sustainability, science experiments, and coding exercises. These activities not only provided valuable insights into engineering disciplines but also allowed students to apply their skills in practical scenarios. Renishaw also took the opportunity to showcase early career opportunities, promoting apprenticeships and graduate placements within the science and engineering sector.

Rebecca Bound, Renishaw’s early careers STEM outreach officer, stressed the importance of exposing students from diverse backgrounds to STEM careers, stating that it plays a pivotal role in enhancing diversity within the industry. She highlighted how such exposure allows students to envision the breadth of skills required in future careers, fostering a realisation of the diversity within the field.

Better Business
Better Business is an initiative launched by Bristol24/7 to help businesses thrive, whilst creating a positive impact on Bristol and the people who live here.

Kirsten Hambly, partnership and engagement manager at BFTP, expressed gratitude for Renishaw’s partnership, emphasising the collective effort towards making Bristol a more racially equitable place for education and employment. The partnership aims to provide talented young individuals from minority backgrounds with opportunities to excel, ultimately contributing to a fairer society.

Renishaw’s collaboration with BFTP spans over two years, focusing on organising STEM insight days for Bristol’s youth. This initiative is particularly crucial as Bristol faces significant disparities in education and employment opportunities, especially for black and minority ethnic communities. BFTP endeavours to address these disparities by providing quality work experience and educational opportunities to young people.
