St Mungos joins the Better Business Network
St Mungo’s is the largest provider of homelessness services in Bristol and has become a member of the Better Business Network.
Last year tens of thousands of people experienced homelessness or rough sleeping in England. There are at least 625 people estimated to be sleeping rough in Bristol alone. And that’s why St Mungo’s is here. They work in Bristol and across the South of England, in partnership with local authorities and communities, to end homelessness and rebuild lives.
Last year they supported more than 28,300 people through their 161 services across the South of the UK. Their work means that more than 2,700 people every night have somewhere safe and warm to stay.
They ran 16 services in Bristol last year providing support for every stage of homelessness. From preventing people becoming homeless in the first place, to running the city’s only outreach team and providing specialist emergency accommodation to help people get back on their feet. Increasing house prices mean that the private rented sector in Bristol is not an option for the people they support, so they also provide longer-term homes for people to move towards more independent lives.
Their mental health services offer tailored support when people need it. And their Bristol Recovery College and Putting Down Roots offer training and mentoring to help people fulfil their ambitions as they move away from homelessness for good.
They also believe that policies can be put in place to end all forms of homelessness for good. Government figures show that homelessness in England is the highest since records began, and a big part of this is being driven by rapidly rising rents in the context of the cost-of-living crisis. They recently wrote a joint open letter to the Chancellor calling on him to raise housing benefit, to support people who rely on it to keep a roof over their head.
St Mungo’s is proud to be part of Bristol 24/7’s Better Bristol Network. They aim to develop strong relationships with partnering organisations and increase their engagement with the public, allowing them to continue making a difference in the community.
