Students join forces with Square Food Foundation to tackle food inequality

By Mia Vines Booth  Thursday Apr 7, 2022

Efforts to tackle food inequality saw students join forces with Square Food Foundation to address some of the challenges faced.

The collaboration between the University of Bristol’s City Challenges initiative and the Knowle West-based charity included a brainstorming session to develop plans for a new outdoor site, fundraising ideas and suggestions for further integration into the local community.

The event was hosted by Square Food Foundation at their site on Daventry Road.

Better Business
Better Business is an initiative launched by Bristol24/7 to help businesses thrive, whilst creating a positive impact on Bristol and the people who live here.

Square Food Foundation has worked to tackle food poverty in Bristol and beyond for more than ten years. Set up by chef, teacher and advocate for food education Barny Haughton, the organisation’s free and subsidised cooking courses help charities, schools and community groups work together to tackle the issue of hunger.

By engaging in this challenge, students not only had the opportunity to learn about and support a good cause but also develop skills such as team working, problem-solving and public speaking.

Speaking about their involvement in the challenge, a student from the initiative said: “Helping to reduce hunger has been something I have been passionate about for a long time.

“Too many people in today’s society live in impoverished conditions where access to food has become scarce, and unaffordable, even for many working households.”

Asked to brainstorm ideas for the Square Food Foundation, Brandon, a public policy MSc student from Bristol University, said: “I’m proud of the many people within our community who give time and effort to providing food to people all around the country.

“This opportunity is fantastic, as it allows some of the brightest students to come together and support such a fantastic organisation”

The Square Food Foundation team expressed their optimism for the future of this collaboration, saying: “It is our hope that this event will lead to further involvement from the University of Bristol and its students with the work of Square Food Foundation.”
