Talk Club joins the Better Business Network

By Bristol24/7  Tuesday Aug 20, 2024

Talk Club is excited to be an official member of the Bristol 24/7 Better Business network.

Founded in March 2019 (and gaining charity status in April 2021), it has grown from a small group of men in the back of a Southville, Bristol pub, to a national mental fitness movement of over 3500 men, in over 100 groups around the UK.

Talk Club is a talking (and listening) community, creating and making it acceptable for men to be vulnerable in a safe space.

Better Business
Better Business is an initiative launched by Bristol24/7 to help businesses thrive, whilst creating a positive impact on Bristol and the people who live here.

Talk Club exists because suicide is the biggest killer of men under 50 in the UK. 76 per cent of UK suicides are male.A life is lost to suicide every 90 minutes in the UK. Talk Club wants to change this. Many men find it hard to talk about their feelings. To many, it’s a foreign language they do not know how to speak.

They try to help by asking: How are you? Out of 10? Every session begins this way. Then, explain why.

Then, we talk about what we are grateful for. Then how are we going to look after ourselves this week? And finally, the checkout number.

There are normally 8-10 men in a talking group, and the session lasts around two hours. After thousands of hours of men sitting in circles, the average check-in is 5.9 while the check-out is 7.6 – an increase of 15 per cent.

They have grown from peer to peer “Talking Groups” to “Talk and Exercise” with football, running, skating and many more.

Talk Club has also created Talk Club Therapy – with groups in Bristol and online with more planned to roll out around the country in the coming months.

Last year they also created Talk Club Business support where they take what they have learnt in the community and apply it to the workforce. Working with both men and women they can set up groups, both talking and exercising, as well as offering listening support.
