Start at Hart’s: introducing new businesses to the market

By Issy Packer  Thursday May 3, 2018

Hart’s Bakery, the artisan bakery based out of one of the Victorian railway arches beneath the platforms of Temple Meads station, has achieved something of a cult status amongst pastry-lovers in Bristol.

Their business has grown substantially over the last seven years, something that baker and owner Laura Hart credits in part to fellow independent business Planet Pizza. The owners agreed to let her have a pop-up stall outside of their Gloucester Road restaurant every Saturday, which then led to Laura setting up her first shop on Hampton Lane before finding a natural home at Temple Meads.

Hart’s Bakery have decided to reinvest their good fortune by extending the same hand-up to other small businesses in Bristol, by offering them a place at a series of markets outside of the bakery on the first Saturday of each month. The first six stallholders range from a company selling ethical handmade accessories to a crowdfunded greengrocer.

Here are the six new businesses who will be at Hart’s for their first Saturday market, on May 5:

Hugo’s Greengrocer, run by Hugo Sapsed, opened in February 2018 on North Street after a successful crowdfunding campaign. The shop sells fresh produce that is sourced no more than 15 miles outside of Bristol, along with groceries including fresh handmade pasta and coffee beans roasted in Bristol. Pick up something fresh from the stall on Saturdays.

Their sister company is Stoke’s Croft’s Pollen Place studios, a range of co-working studios for entrepreneurs, innovators, creative and tech freelancers and small businesses, to run workshops and offer advice to new companies. At Hart’s they’ll be offering custard tarts, business cards, posters and event schedules.

Audrey will be selling jewellery and homewear from the stall, and purchasing unique pieces from her will be a great way to support a global movement.

Jacob Long and Josh Tunstill are the founders of the Bristol-based company and all their cycling bags and panniers are made from natural fabrics, such as waxed cotton and leather. The products are made in small batches and there is sure to be a wide range on display at the Harts Bakery market.

Amy Rose ceramics specialises in making ceramic pots, mugs and other objects, glazed in striking colours. She has been making ceramics for 6-7 years but simply as a way to unwind. However, she now has her own studio space at Maze Studios in Barton Hill and as well as her beautiful ceramics, she also sews small bags and quilts. Amy will be selling her selection of homemade ceramic products for the first time ever at the market on Saturday, so this chance to pick up her beautiful creations is not to be missed.
