£14 million funding boost for Airbus
Business Secretary Sajid Javid announced £14 million of investment into aerospace research to be led by Filton’s Airbus site. The R&D funding will fund two projects, one to improve the manufacturing process for the next generation of aircraft wings, and another to improve aviation fuel for environmental efficiency.
The aerospace sector is seen as a key economic generator by the Government, growing by 14 per cent since 2011, and is a key employer in Bristol.
President and Chief Executive Officer of Airbus, Fabrice Bregier announced the news with the Business Secretary during a visit to the firm’s offices in North Bristol. He said: “The UK is the world leader in wing and fuel system development for aircraft. This latest investment in new technologies will help secure this position for decades to come.”
“Our aerospace sector is a real success story,” added Business Secretary Sajid Javid. “This highly productive industry provides highly skilled jobs and is a key part of our long-term economic growth. That’s why we are extending our commitment to aerospace R&D by a further £900 million over the next 10 years. With industry’s commitment to match this funding, this will result in £3.9bn investment in aerospace R&D since 2013.”
Airbus is also one of the UK’s biggest inward investors in research and development (R&D). In recent years we have invested around £480 million annually, making us the second largest aerospace investor in R&D in the UK.
