New £2.4M innovation hub opens at Bristol & Bath Science Park

By Ellie Pipe  Monday Jul 5, 2021

A new £2.4m innovation hub at Bristol & Bath Science Park is set to drive investment and high-tech jobs in the region, say project leaders.

The state-of-the-art facility that was officially opened at the Emersons Green site on Monday has been designed to extend capacity while complementing existing businesses.

The science park is jointly owned by South Gloucestershire Council and the University of Bath and operates a gateway policy, meaning it seeks tenant companies working in science, technology, research and development.

With existing office space at maximum capacity, funding was sought for the new innovation hub, which was originally due to open in spring 2020.

Ben Burton, South Gloucestershire’s cabinet member for corporate resources, said: “I am delighted to be able to formally open these impressive new facilities and to see that they are already driving new investment and expansion in our high-tech sectors.

“The science park is already a world-class centre for science and technology businesses to grow and as we look towards the future, I have no doubt this new space will encourage even more innovation, investment and job opportunities for our community.”

At the ribbon-cutting on Monday, Burton welcomed representatives from three tenants, TP Group, Spark Product Innovation and INSPHERE, which each plan to take occupancy of the new facilities.

Johnathan Milsom of TP Group said the move gives the company the opportunity to bring consultants from multiple sites into one office.

“We were impressed with the amount of collaboration space for our consultants to use across both sites at the science park and look forward to bringing our consultants to site. Just over the very first few weeks of using the forum space we have already begun discussions with other residents to build on potential opportunities to collaborate on projects going forward.”

£1million of the funding for the new centre was granted by The West of England Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) Economic Development Fund, with an additional £1.4million from South Gloucestershire Council.

The science park is designed to encourage and facilitate collaboration. Bosses say the resulting innovation often crosses sectors and connects industries that might not otherwise have considered working together.
