£8.5m funding to boost action sports firm’s global reach
An action sports and lifestyle company in Bristol is to ramp up its global reach after receiving £8.5m in funding from HSBC.
Third-generation family business Shiner, which supplies action sports and lifestyle products, is based in Aztec West but also has warehouses in California and Holland.
The firm, which was founded 85 years ago, has doubled its turnover in the last 18 months.
Managing director Charlie Allen, whose grandfather Jack founded Shiner as a builders’ merchant in 1936, says it is a “hugely exciting” time for the company.
He said: “Action sports are becoming more popular than ever, with a significant increase in people participating in skateboarding across the globe since the pandemic began and great exposure through the Olympics.
“The funding package we received from HSBC UK will help us grow into the European market post-Brexit, as we expand our European distribution base while remaining committed to our UK customers.”

Bristol-based action sports firm Shiner has secured a seven-figure finance package from HSBC.
Shiner distributes international brands as well as making its own skateboards, scooters and roller skates.
James Shepherd, area director of HSBC in Bristol, added: “Shiner is a perfect example of a great Bristol success story – a family business that has expanded into the US and Europe and plans to continue increasing its global reach.
“We’re delighted to be supporting the business in its next phase of growth and we can’t wait to continue seeing it flourish in these next few years.”
