Bristol learning foundation CEO given honorary doctorate
Steve Taylor, chief executive of the Cabot Learning Federation (CLF), has been awarded an Honorary Doctor of Education by UWE Bristol, in recognition of his significant contributions to education in the South West.
Taylor received the felicitation on November 25, during UWE Bristol’s autumn graduation ceremonies held at the Bristol Beacon. He is one of three individuals honored with an honorary degree this year.
“I feel greatly humbled by this award,” said Taylor.
“It is a considerable honor from a university I have long admired, and whose values align with those of the Cabot Learning Federation. This recognition is a tribute to the collaborative work of my colleagues in the region with whom I’ve had the privilege to work for many years.”

For over a decade, Taylor has led the CLF, a multi-academy trust that now serves 18,000 children across Bristol, South Gloucestershire, North Somerset, Somerset, and Gloucestershire.
Under his leadership, the trust has grown to encompass over 35 educational entities, providing services for students aged 2 to 19 and employing more than 3,000 staff.
CLF also plays a key role in regional educational development. It is a founding partner of the Five Counties Teaching School Hubs Alliance, and through its CLF Institute, operates the Five Counties SCITT, as well as several specialist hubs focused on maths, behavior, and attendance.
In addition to his work at CLF, Taylor is involved in broader educational initiatives. He is chair of The Queen Street Group, an alliance of 45 multi-academy trusts, and serves in various governance roles across the sector.
Appointed a National Leader in Education in 2015, Taylor is a fellow of the Chartered College of Teaching and a trained lead inspector for Ofsted.
Professor Yvonne Beach, UWE Bristol’s pro vice-chancellor, praised Taylor’s impact on education. “His calm, uncompromising leadership at CLF has fostered a commitment to equity, driven by a passion that resonates nationally,” she said.
“Steve’s work exemplifies how education is about more than academic success – it’s about creating environments where students and communities can thrive.”
Taylor’s leadership has laid a foundation for lasting, positive change in the educational landscape, benefiting not only the students of CLF but also the wider community.
