Bristol solicitor named ‘Legal Hero’
A Bristol-based solicitor has been unveiled as a “legal hero” at an inaugural ceremony.
Sabeena Pirooz was named as one of seven solicitors who have “gone above and beyond” at the Law Society‘s Legal Heroes event on Thursday in London.
Hundreds of nominations were whittled down by a judging panel to a shortlist of 26.
The award is in recognition of the solicitors who have made the biggest difference to the lives of others. In Sabeena’s case, it is for her pro-bono work for her charity, the Sky Project.
A Law Society spokesperson said: “Sabeena has made a lasting and tangible difference to victims of forced marriage and honour-based abuse.
“She has had a far-reaching impact in raising awareness, supporting victims and encouraging the sharing of best practice between local organisations to combat forced marriage collectively.
“Sabeena’s work has shown that she has a deep personal commitment to making a difference to the lives of those in trouble or in need.”

Sabeena has been involved with the Sky Project since it started in 2009. Her work at the charity is entirely voluntary and she is also a clinical negligence lawyer at the social justice firm, Thompsons Solicitors.
She said she is “thrilled and in shock” to have received the Legal Hero award and thanked all of the Sky Project team, including long-term volunteer and fellow lawyer, Zara Liedl-Carroll, who nominated her.
Sabeena told Bristol24/7: “It is not very often lawyers are called ‘heroes’ and I think the Law Society’s initiative in promoting the work of solicitors to be incredibly important.
“It may sound like a cliche but many lawyers really are looking to help the most vulnerable in society, yet we often hear negative stories, such as the rhetoric of ‘lefty lawyers’ being one example.
“To be surrounded by lawyers going above and beyond doing such fantastic work at the Legal Heroes event was truly inspirational.”
