Changing the future workforce across the built environment

By Ellie Pipe  Tuesday Aug 9, 2022

An award-winning talent accelerator programme is seeking new recruits in Bristol.

Shape My City seeks to change the future workforce across the built environment by inspiring people between the ages of 15 and 18 who are currently underrepresented in the industry to consider a career as an architect, engineer, city planner, construction project manager, urban designer or another role in the field.

The free programme led by Design West provides talented young people with opportunities they might not otherwise have.

Better Business
Better Business is an initiative launched by Bristol24/7 to help businesses thrive, whilst creating a positive impact on Bristol and the people who live here.

The need to diversify the sector is clear.

Currently:

Shape My City states: “Diversity in design means a diversity of experience, perspective and creativity. Successful cities, towns, high streets and green spaces are shaped by the citizens of tomorrow.”

Shape My City is a year-long programme that runs from September to July with modules taking place on the first Wednesday of the month, from 5-7pm, at Design West.

Workshops and seminars include:

  • Work alongside design professionals
  • Develop teamwork, confidence and communication skills
  • Learn about a variety of career options in the design sector & pathways to success
  • Be assigned a mentor from a leading company to help with university applications and work experience
  • Connect with other creative young people from across the city and begin to create life-long networks
  • Go on site visits to inspiring buildings

Shape My City is free to participate in and Design West will contribute £5 per module for travel and provide an evening meal for the cohort.
