Engine Shed launches Scaleup Generator to support fast growth businesses
It can be a daunting task for those at the head of fast-growing companies to navigate the murky waters of business.
Which is why Engine Shed is launching a Scaleup Generator website that will act as a source of information, insight and support to help bosses and entrepreneurs access and understand the services available.
Developed in partnership with the West of England Growth Hub, the new site hosts The Scaleup Yearbook – a map that highlights 400 organisations, services and firms, along with details of support on offer – and is the culmination of a year of work by scaleup enabler Briony Phillips (main photo).
She created the resource in a bid to invigorate the investment ecosystem in the region, improve access to finance, inspire founders and aspiring scaleups, and build Bristol’s profile as a home for successful scaleup companies.
Now, the Engine Shed team is seeking scaleup business leaders to take part in The Scale up Institute’s survey – the largest of its kind in the UK – which will go on to influence policy and boost funding for the region.

Speaking about the scaleup generator, Briony said: “The West of England is a national leader and innovator in this kind of work.
“The Scaleup Yearbook will be shared with colleagues across the world working towards scaleup support, and we hope it will act as a framework for other regions as they move towards similar economic goals.
“The Scaleup Generator website demonstrates how rich both the scaleup support community, and the scaleup communities, are in the wider Bristol and Bath region. Now, our collective challenge is to maximise the positive impact for all our citizens.”
A series of scaleup briefing events and a growing bank of case studies at Engine Shed will offer inspiration for startups and scaleups.
There are also peer-to-peer networks, shared resources, data and maps to expose the work that happens locally.
The majority of Briony’s research will be accessible on the Scaleup Generator website, including hot-off-the-press insights into finding office space, securing investment, useful networking information, and the scale up support map.
In addition, TechSPARK, the tech and digital business hub, has been commissioned to create case studies on existing scaleup success stories, including Ultrahaptics and Duel.
The yearbook highlights the need for a uniting brand that will put Bristol and Bath on the map as a world-leader in sustainable economic growth.
The 16-page report highlights the success of fast growth companies in the Bristol region since receiving scaleup support over the past 12 months, and recognises the work that still needs to be done to invigorate the local investment ecosystem.
West of England mayor Tim Bowles praised the generator for the role it will play in supporting and encouraging the region’s thriving economy.
