Get on your bikes and ride
In 2008 Bristol was named the UK’s first Cycling City, cementing its position as one of the most bike-friendly places in Europe.
Yet, a Bristol City Council-backed travel survey suggests only 10 per cent of Bristolians cycle to work.
Marking Cycle to Work Day 2024 on August 1, Bristol City Centre and Redcliffe & Temple Business Improvement District (BID) have joined forces with Life Cycle to get more people cycling to work.
Based on Smeaton Road, Life Cycle has a strong presence in the city. It is known for encouraging Bristolians to take two-wheeled commutes to work and also for its top tier “Dr Bike” bike repair services.

In early 2021, Redcliffe & Temple BID introduced a Dr Bike initiative and Bristol City Centre BID followed soon after. Three years on, nearly 1,500 bikes have been serviced across Bristol.
In a survey conducted by Redcliffe & Temple BID, 98 per cent of participants said they would recommend Dr Bike to colleagues and 40 per cent said they have used their bike more as a result of the scheme.
Life Cycle said they are “on a mission to help more people experience the benefits of cycling – transforming lives and the environment in the process.”
To date, the organisation has helped over 87,000 people.

Becky Whitlock, marketing manager at Life Cycle, added: “We are really grateful for the opportunity to support more people to cycle by removing a key barrier – lack of access to safe, reliable bikes.
“We look forward to seeing how we, alongside the BIDs, can transform even more lives through cycling, enriching health and wellbeing for those working in businesses around the local area.”
