New lease of life for historic Bristol brewery

By Ellie Pipe  Tuesday Aug 7, 2018

Preparatory work is underway to begin transforming part of Bristol’s historic former George’s brewery into new office and retail space.

Once complete, work on the two Fermentation Buildings will mark the final phase of the Finzels Reach regeneration scheme.

Cubex, the developers behind the project, say they want to breathe new life into the area and see it become a hub for businesses in the city

Exciting plans are already afoot for the neighbouring building, which Bristol-based brewery Left Handed Giant hopes to transform into a new ‘brewpub’ and new brewery.

The Michelin-starred Casamia will also be opening a new development kitchen, with Peter Sanchez-Iglesias and his team preparing street-food style dishes in the space above the brewery.

Cubex plans to create 15,000 sq ft of office space across the first the first and second floors of the Fermentation Buildings, with the ground floor housing “an eclectic mix of retailers”, which could include restaurants, shops and cafes.

The Fermentation Building was recently used as an indoor night street food market – with relics from when Courage brewed here still to be seen on the walls

Cubex director Peter Walford called the development a “key milestone” for Finzels Reach.

“Our aim is to breathe new life into this iconic location and give it new purpose without losing the charm and heritage that make it special,” he said.

“It will be the ideal home for the city’s growing businesses and we look forward to hearing from those who would like to be part of this exciting new quarter.”

The Fermentation Buildings are part of the rich brewing history at Finzels Reach, which saw Courage take over the site from George’s.

The property was used as a working brewery from 1702 until 2000 and the buildings have largely remained unused since the last drop was brewed.
