Thatchers expands exclusive Cider Barn range with new offerings

By Milan Perera  Friday Nov 22, 2024

Thatchers, the family-run cider maker, has unveiled three new additions to its Cider Barn range: Thatchers Oak-aged Redstreak, Thatchers Scrumptious, and Thatchers Heritage.

According to Thatchers, each new cider reflects the brand’s commitment to crafting small-batch, experimental beverages, showcasing innovative techniques and distinct apple varieties.

The Cider Barn range is a celebration of Thatchers’ long-standing tradition of producing unique ciders. Made with premium apples, these ciders highlight the company’s expertise in blending flavors, using techniques such as oak-aging and exploring unusual apple varieties.

Thatchers’ Myrtle Farm, home to an impressive collection of 458 apple varieties, provides an extensive source of inspiration for these experiments.

The rain-soaked summer was a blessing in disguise for the Somerset-based cider makers as they picked a record harvest which also marked their 120th anniversary.

Richard Johnson, head cider maker at Thatchers, shared his excitement about the creative freedom the Cider Barn offers. “It’s a privilege to experiment with different varieties, fermentation methods, and blending to create new styles of cider. Each cider tells a story about its apples and the craftsmanship behind it,” he explained.

Martin Thatcher, the fourth-generation cider maker, emphasised the importance of innovation in the company’s history. Martin said: “As we celebrate 120 years of cider-making at Myrtle Farm, we continue to prioritise innovation. These small-batch ciders are where new ideas come to life.”

He also noted that Thatchers Juicy Apple, a popular cider born from the Cider Barn range, is now widely available in major supermarkets and bars.

“As we celebrate 120 years of cider-making at Myrtle Farm, we continue to prioritise innovation. These small-batch ciders are where new ideas come to life,” said Martin Thatcher, fourth generation cider maker

The three new ciders include:

  • Thatchers Oak-aged Redstreak (8.4% ABV): A bold cider made from the Somerset Redstreak apple, aged in 175-year-old oak vats for a rich, spicy flavor with hints of vanilla and a peppery finish.
  • Thatchers Scrumptious (5.0% ABV): A fruity and effervescent cider crafted from early summer apples like Katy, Scrumptious, and Discovery, offering natural strawberry notes and a crisp finish.
  • Thatchers Heritage (6.0% ABV): A tribute to Somerset’s cider-making heritage, this full-bodied cider blends bittersweet apples for a smooth, tannin-rich taste that celebrates traditional cider-making methods.
