The business revolutionising the way we clean

By Valentina Hernández Gómez  Tuesday Nov 29, 2022

A cleaning product business is striving to revolutionise the way we clean.

Ekologik, a Bristol-based company, creates a range of sustainable cleaning products which eliminates single-use plastic from cleaning.

With traditional cleaning products consisting of 95 per cent water, Ekologik’s powered pods are lightweight which reduces carbon emissions drastically by transporting just a few grams of powder, compared to containers of cleaning product.

The pods come with signs that encourage customers to minimise waste and reuse pre-owned bottles.

Cleaning products have a considerable impact on the environment, ranging from the chemicals they contain, ending up polluting streams and rivers, to the packaging: aerosol cans containing plastic materials that are slow to biodegrade.

Kaye Wannerton, the founder of the company, was a frustrated conscious consumer once but decided to channel her anger into constructive creativity.

“A lot of sustainable products out there have three barriers: they are not as effective, ease of use, and the third thing is the price,” Wannerton said.

Ekologik aims to overcome those barriers, formulating and manufacturing low-carbon pods that are toxic, palm, and plastic-free. The brand also uses local suppliers, which lowers its emissions.

The company partners with Surfers Against Sewage, donating a percentage of every sale to the charity dedicated to the protection of oceans and wildlife.

With the cost of living crisis changing the way people spend and prioritise their budgets, Wannerton hopes that their pods are an inexpensive option for people.

“Our products are super affordable to buy, encouraging people to be more sustainable. We have made our prices lower than the plastic-containing alternatives,” she added.

Ekologik has also taken part in the NatWest Business Accelerator, a free programme that encourages and accompanies entrepreneurs to take their businesses further.

“Having the opportunity to share a space and meet with like-minded businesses has been very helpful,” Wannerton said about the programme.

Beyond the “brilliant” customer feedback that the brand has received so far, the most satisfying fact for its founders is thinking about the impact on the environment.

“Every time someone purchases we’re saving a plastic bottle going into landfill,” Kaye said.
