UWE Bristol internships go virtual to prepare students for ‘new normal’
UWE Bristol’s internship scheme is now fully virtual due to Covid-19.
Preparing students for the “new normal”, placements have been redesigned to be completed remotely.
Interns will carry out two months of work experience remotely, while small and medium size companies (SMEs) hiring them are to receive full funding – in the past, only 50 per cent of the internship was funded by UWE Bristol.
Bristol24/7 has enrolled in the scheme, employing an undergraduate intern for eight weeks under the terms of the scheme.
UWE Bristol students have until Friday, July 10 to apply for an internship through UWE’s CareerHub, or have the option to source their own opportunity. Once employed, interns must begin their work experience by July 2020 and complete it by the end of September of this year.
It is hoped that the ability to work from home will provide students with more opportunities, as they will no longer be restricted by location, increasing access to potential employers across the UK.

Throughout their internship, students will receive support from the university and will be overseen by a manager, who regularly checks in with them to monitor progress and help with the tasks.
“The virtual internship may be the ‘new normal’ for some time and we as a university are keen to embrace and adapt to what is needed,” says Hannah Newmarch, head of careers and enterprise at UWE Bristol, said.
“As businesses change their way of working due to coronavirus, they are expecting graduates to do the same. Securing an internship will help students get used to the working environment and to hit the ground running when they graduate.”
