Flotilla of abandoned boats for Leigh Woods
A flotilla of abandoned fishing boats will be installed by artist Luke Jerram deep in Leigh Woods for an artwork forming part of Bristol’s year as European Green Capital.
Jerram’s piece, called Withdrawn, hopes to raise discussion about climate change, extreme weather, changing ocean temperatures, falling fish stocks and human impact on the marine environment.
The Bristol artist was behind the water slide on Park Street this summer. He also brought pianos across the city and a pixelated sculpture of his daughter still fascinates commuters near platform 1 at Temple Meads.
is needed now More than ever
Thanks to The National Trust and Forestry Commission England, Withdrawn will be open for the public to explore for six months, with events taking place both at day and night.
Jerram said: “It’s fantastic to be commissioned by the National Trust and to work with the Forestry Commission to develop Withdrawn for Bristol2015.
“This is my latest ambitious and logistically complex arts project. The artwork was inspired by my concerns for the environment and the powerful imagery last winter’s floods brought the south west.”
