Green spaces under threat from schools

By Bristol24/7  Tuesday Jun 23, 2015

Campaigners are fighting to save two green spaces from developments linked to schools on land on either side of the M32.

Fairfield High School, just off Muller Road, wants to build sports pitches across the road on South Purdown, which joins Stoke Park.

Meanwhile, plans for 12 luxury homes on a field owned by Colston School next to Eastville Park have been mooted.

Friends of South Purdown have launched a petition and are urging people to object to the proposed sports pitches which already have planning permission, granted ten years ago.

Campaigners say the old application is no longer relevant for the work which is due to start in September.

“A concern is that these plans are ten years old and no longer address the needs of the wildlife, the community and even the school and at the very least the development be put on hold whilst the plans are reviewed and public consultations held,” a spokesperson for the group said.

Posters and banners have gone up in the area urging residents to attend a public meeting at Eastville Library on June 30 at 7pm.

Meanwhile, across the M32, Protect Frome Valley has sprung to oppose plans for luxury homes on land belonging to Colston School next to Eastville Park lake.

Plans have been submitted to the council and local residents were told at a public meeting that the homes would be “up-market”, with a possible market value of between £300,000-£400,000.

Protect From Valley argues that the land is already prone to flooding and is a haven for wildlife. The group is urging people to make objections by June 2.
