Bristol elects four women MPs
On a night of surprises across the UK, there have been no shocks in Bristol. Read our live coverage here from Bristol24/7 reporters at both counts from 10pm last night to 7am this morning.
Bristol North West was the first seat to declare as incumbent Tory Charlotte Leslie won a second term after increasing her majority. The Spectator’s backbencher of the year 2013 beat her closest challenger, Darren Jones of Labour, by almost 5,000 votes.
Bristol East remained Labour despite a strong showing from the Tories. Kerry McCarthy has been the MP for the constituency since 2005 and won this time by almost 4,000 votes. “We need to wait until the dust settles to have long hard look at what went wrong,” McCarthy said about losses elsewhere after a disappointing election night for Labour.

Bristol got its first new MP of this general election when Labour’s Karin Smyth was declared the winner in Bristol South. Smyth thanked Dawn Primarolo for her 28 years of service to the area. She said: “It is an honour to be entrusted by the people of Bristol South to follow in her footsteps.”
And despite the so-called “green surge” in Bristol West, it was also won by Labour with Thangam Debbonaire taking the seat from Lib Dem Stephen Williams.
