St Michael’s maternity unit ranked UK best

By Alison Maney  Thursday Feb 11, 2016

St Michael’s Hospital’s maternity services have been ranked as the best in the UK.

In the Care Quality Commission’s Maternity Survey 2015, the Bristol hospital ranked above 132 other maternity programmes at acute trusts across the country.

The survey ranks maternity services based on patient feedback about treatment before, during and after the birth. On 53 per cent of the survey’s questions, patients said St Michael’s exceeded their expectations.

“We are delighted to be ranked top in the country by the results of the CQC Maternity Survey,” said Ian Barrington, divisional director of women’s and children’s services at St Michael’s Hospital.

“This is a fantastic achievement for the Trust and a true reflection of the exceptional service our midwives and staff provide at St Michaels, as well as the positive experience our patients receive.

“The Trust likes to take all patient feedback on board, and we strive to continue to improve areas in the department that are not yet ranked better than expected.”

Barrington attributes a large part the hospital’s success to its onsite midwifery-led-unit and postnatal ward for women having induction.

Head of midwifery Sarah Windfeld added: “The Maternity service wants to continually improve the service it offers to women and families. Therefore it will be shortly piloting the use of family rooms on the post-natal wards to allow partners to stay overnight where this can be accommodated.”
