At-Bristol to be UK’s first 3D planetarium
At-Bristol’s planetarium is getting a major upgrade to become the UK’s first digital 3D planetarium.
The enhancement will see new shows presented in ‘Ultra High Definition’ from two projectors, and 7.1 surround sound, creating a fully immersive experience.
Presenter-led seasonal stargazing shows will continue when the new attraction opens in April, now in a choice of 2D and 3D.
is needed now More than ever
Funding for the project has been provided by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) via Bristol City Council, with the aim of opening up the planetarium to new opportunities outside of visitor opening hours.
It won’t just be gazing up at the night sky; something the planetarium has branched out from recently by hosting events inside such as a screening by Bristol Bad Film Club or being the venue for the Festival of Football Ideas.
Technology companies, research organisations and small businesses will all be offered the opportunity to use the new and improved planetarium, for example, to view full 3D design models to real time weather forecasting maps.
The aim is for the Millennium Square planetarium to become one of the leading data visualisation tools in the Europe.
At-Bristol chief executive Phil Winfield said: “We are delighted to have been awarded funding by DCMS via Bristol City Council for this project. It will enable us to transform our planetarium into a world-class facility to inspire the scientists of tomorrow.”
City council director of Bristol Futures Stephen Hilton added: “By upgrading the planetarium to create a state-of-the-art city data visualisation facility, we are developing something world leading and unique for Bristol citizens and businesses.”
The At-Bristol planetarium will close on February 16 and reopen to the public on April 24.
