Hundreds march to Reclaim the Night

By Pamela Parkes  Friday Nov 7, 2014

Hundreds of people have marched through Bristol city centre in a Reclaim the Night protest against sexual violence.

Reclaim the Night is an international movement which “protests against victim blaming which tells women to stay off the streets if they want to avoid sexual violence or harassment”.

The march began with a candlelit vigil in Queen Square to remember survivors of rape and sexual abuse.

Alice Philips from University of Bristol Students Union said they were joined in solidarity with similar marches across the world.

“It’s an international movement to protest against street harassment, sexual violence and victim blaming attitudes which tell women to stay off the streets at night.”

Men and women, young and old, joined the protest as it went to the Anson Rooms. Marching alongside Alice was her mother Juile who said: “I’ve been a feminist from my teens… I’m very proud to march alongside her and support the issues which I think are as important now, if not more so, then when I was her age so I very, very strongly support the march.”

Another women joining the march was Darcy: “I’m walking tonight because I believe that a woman should be able to walk anywhere she wants at any time of day or night without feeling threatened. I’m tired of being yelled at on the street and I’m tired of walking with my keys clenched between my fists and that’s why I’m marching today.”
