Bristol votes remain but UK chooses to leave
Bristol decisively voted to stay in the European Union, with 141,027 people voting to remain and 87,418 voting to leave.
But the city’s result of 62 per cent in versus 38 per cent out wasn’t matched by the national outcome, with the UK voting by 52 per cent to 48 per cent to leave the EU in Thursday’s historic referendum.
Bristol’s result was declared in Whitchurch by senior returning officer Nicola Yates much earlier than expected soon after 4am.

Bath & North East Somerset also voted to remain by 58 per cent to 42 per cent, but neighbouring South Gloucestershire and North Somerset both voted to leave by margins of 8,000 and 4,000.
Like Bristol, London and Scotland voted strongly to stay in the EU but the north of England saw a strong showing for leave.
Overnight, the value of sterling has tumbled to its lowest levels since 1985, with David Cameron expected to make a statement early on Friday morning.
After that? Who knows.
