Green Capital 2015: Students on board
This year Bristol is European Green Capital, so Bristol 2015 found out what Bristol University students think about sustainability and how they hope to make an impact in 2015.
Moving to a fossil free Bristol
“Following the successes of divestment campaigns globally, FOSSIL FREE Bristol University is calling on the University to remove its investments in coal, oil and gas, and take positive action against climate change by seeking alternatives.
is needed now More than ever
“Cast under the spotlight as Green Capital, Bristol forms part of a worldwide network of Fossil Free campaigns who strive to remove institution investment from fossil fuel companies who continue to profit from their environmentally-devastating activities at the expense of people and planet.”
Rachel, FOSSIL FREE Bristol lead
Collaborating with societies
“Sustainability is the most interesting and important challenge facing humanity today. To celebrate Green Capital, I’m hoping to organise a Green Gathering in February in collaboration with different student societies.
“I’m looking forward to the exciting talks and events scheduled across the year, and the great new ideas and people that it will bring into Bristol. As I’m finishing my Biology degree in summer, it’s also a good chance for me to find inspiration for employment.”
Jack, 3rd year Biology, Bristol University Sustainability Team (BUST) leader
A great achievement
“I care about sustainability because I care about everyone. It’s not just for nature – it’s for ourselves – it’s about being happy and healthy! I’ve been involved for two years in green campaigns and events, including with UBU Get Green, Bristol Hub and various societies.
“We should be proud to represent Europe as Green Capital – and all contribute to this great achievement!”
Shruthi, 2nd year Economics & Finance, Sustainability and Environmental Officer
Supporting local businesses
“Green Capital is a great way to showcase the sustainability achievements of the city and the exciting projects Bristol offers. I’m interested in recycling and campaign for consumers to not buy unsustainable packaging, reduce waste and support local producers.
“Sustainability is the way forward – we should all recognise it. Bristol 2015 has a programme of amazing opportunities – I volunteered as an LED-lit umbrella holder at the Official Launch – how many times do you get a chance to do that?!”
Adela, 2nd year Law
Caring about climate change
“Since a young age I’ve cared about the environment and did what I could to make a positive impact, from campaigning since the age of ten to now joining Bristol University Fossil Free and UBU Get Green’s National Campaigns Group, amongst environmental volunteering.
“Climate change is the most pressing issue we face today – we are risking our futures by living in an unsustainable way.
“Green Capital is an exciting time for Bristol and the University – we are lucky to have this award and we should work toward making a difference to prove our title worthy!”
Paloma, 1st year Geography
Travelling by bike
“Bristol Bicycle Company is a social enterprise bicycle rental scheme, providing loans to students for weeks, terms or the academic year.
“The project is strengthening links between students and the wider community through partnerships with local organisations including Bristol Bike Project. The scheme exemplifies the University’s commitment to decreasing our transport footprint, encouraging students to lead a sustainable lifestyle and contributing to European Green Capital.”
Sarah, project lead
