Bristol City WFC to start Super League season at Ashton Gate

By Viv Beech  Tuesday Jan 10, 2017

Newly promoted Bristol City WFC have announced their fixtures for the upcoming Women’s Super League Spring Series competition.

The Vixens start their campaign against Reading at a double-header on Saturday, April 22 at Ashton Gate. Bristol City’s men will host Barnsley in the Championship at 3pm before the Women’s game at 6pm.

Be sure to pencil in April 29 to your diary as City are up against defending champions Manchester City at Stoke Gifford Stadium, with a feisty away tie against local rivals Yeovil Town following the Wednesday after.

Teams will play each other just once in a one-off, transitional competition before the WSL’s switch to a winter calendar for 2017-18.

For top-flight teams, the league runs over six weeks until Saturday, 3 June. There will be no promotion or relegation at the end of the Spring Series, but trophies will be awarded to each division’s winner.

“Now that the fixtures are released, it becomes very real and exciting,” said City Women’s head coach Willie Kirk.

“The big clubs we will come up against are the challenges that we want to face every week, and the reason that we worked so hard last year to get back to WSL1.

“The first game at Ashton Gate will add that little bit more prestige to the game and the girls are really looking forward to playing in front of, hopefully, a very large and enthusiastic Bristol crowd.

“The girls are a bubbly bunch anyway, but as soon as you start talking about facing the likes of Man City or Chelsea, or playing against Kim Little or Fara Williams you can feel the excitement building throughout the squad.”

FA director of football participation and development Kelly Simmons said: “It’s set to be an exciting few months for the domestic women’s game with clubs competing for this one-off trophy and the Women’s FA Cup final in May.

“It’s important that we keep building this momentum ahead of the Euros and for the return of the WSL in September.”
