Campaign to remove one million shoes from landfill comes to Bristol

By Valentina Hernández Gómez  Thursday Dec 8, 2022

A national campaign to remove one million pairs of running shoes from landfill has launched across the UK, including in Bristol.

An estimated 33 million running shoes ends up in landfill each year and stay there, for up to 1,000 years before decomposing.

JogOn aims to hit the milestone of 10,000 donated pairs of trainers by this Christmas.

“This is an incredibly exciting time for the JogOn campaign but we need everyone across the UK to donate to really make an impact; to support us to reach our target and prolong the life of just one asset they once owned,” Tony Piedade said.

“We’ve made it easy and as cost-effective as possible to donate.”

The company has already saved 4,000 pairs of running shoes from landfill. As the festive season approaches, JogOn is inviting people to donate their trainers to help this sustainable cause.

What happens with the shoes they receive?

The donated shoes are inspected. If they’re at the end of life, they’ll be disposed of in the UK. However, JogOn is currently on its way to establishing a partnership with a waste-to-energy plant to ensure the shoes are properly terminated.

The shoes that are in a ‘good condition’ are repurposed and sent to charities, NGOs, and micro-economies across the country, and given to people who need them the most.

People can donate their shoes by either posting them via Evri or visiting their closest drop-off point. There are over 200 points across the UK, including at leisure centres, universities, and sports retailers.

If you’re interested in taking part and donating your shoes, visit JogOn’s website to find your closest drop-off point.
