Over 200 Bristol climate groups join to tackle climate change
Over 200 environmental, climate and social justice groups from Bristol are coming together to tackle climate change.
Organised by Extinction Rebellion (XR), Stronger than One will see groups come together on January 19 at the Malcolm X Centre in St Paul’s.
The event is part of XR’s move away from direct action towards unified peaceful protest. A spokesperson from XR said the meeting will be an opportunity to explore the idea that working together will enhance the work each group is carrying.
is needed now More than ever
The event will be facilitated by Manu Maunganidze, co-director of the Bristol Green Capital Partnership, and founder of Nature Youth Connection & Education.
In an ongoing film series created by XR Bristol, Nigel Shipley, an XR member, highlighted the interconnection between all crises that the UK and the world are currently facing, and the importance of tackling them together.
“The number of such groups (environmental, climate, social justice) indicates widespread concern about the many interlocking crises we face and how fragmented is the movement demanding change.
“As groups working for positive social change and climate justice, we are a broad and diverse ecosystem, but one thing we all know is that we can’t afford this anymore, and change is needed now,” he said.
“The solutions to each crisis are the same”.
Despite objections to climate activists’ method’s by media and the general public, climate groups still play a key role on setting the agenda.
Some key demands that bring together a wide array of climate activists range from investment in renewable energies and public transport, to a just and green economic transition.
“Only the common sense of ordinary people will help us navigate the challenging decisions ahead,” said Shipley.
“This meeting is an exercise in bringing together concerned citizens with an open agenda to find the best way forward to achieve the urgent changes that we agree are needed,” he concluded.
