SERCHIA announces exhibition from new artist-in-residence Pia Paulina Guilmoth

By Sarski Anderson  Friday May 17, 2024

SERCHIA Gallery’s current artist-in-residence is the photographer Pia Paulina Guilmoth, whose solo exhibition Eternal Orchard will run for six weeks, from May 23.

A former recipient of the prestigious MacDowell Fellowship in New Hampshire, USA, Guilmoth is usually based in unceded Wabanaki territory in rural Maine.

She makes images, sculptural work and collage using found objects “gathered while wandering around the backroads”.

As an artist, Guilmoth’s aesthethic is informed by her preoccupations with themes of beauty, gender, dysphoria, ritual, and our unfolding relationship to nature.

‘Dust’

‘Waterfall’

Now in the process of creating her third monograph, she has previously published two others, including 2021’s At Night Gardens Grow (from Stanley/Barker).

In Guilmoth’s exhibition notes to Eternal Orchard, she cites the images as “an attempt at harnessing beauty as a resistance to a world often at odds with joy and perpetual growth.

‘Moths’

‘Milky web’

“Pia Paulina’s work shows a haunted transgender utopian other-world where humans and the land are in communion.

“She is looking for beauty, escape, decay and growth in her surroundings seen through the guise of family, friends, and the rural landscape she inhabits.”

‘Magnolia’

‘Mud’

Pia Paulina Guilmoth: Eternal Orchard is at SERCHIA Gallery from May 23-July 5, Monday-Friday 10am-5pm (free, by appointment).
