Artists use 12-tonne road roller for printing

By Steve Wright  Thursday Jun 30, 2016

Bristol artists are set to take roller printing to a new level as they team up with homeless charity St Mungo’s.

Two Bedminster-based artists will use a 12-tonne road roller to print from six-foot lino blocks at a public event from 11am this Saturday, July 2.

The event at L Shed, the warehouse situated next to M Shed on Princes Wharf, is being organised by Aoife Barrett and Monika Rycerz of Unit10 Studios in BS3.

The prints produced by residents of St Mungo’s, a charity providing temporary accommodation and support services for Bristol’s homeless, will take inspiration from themes such as “transition”, “new possibilities” and “social engagement”. The project, Threshold, is a three-month collaboration between the artists and St Mungo’s.

The prints will go on public display at The Control Room arts space on Redcliffe Bridge from July 3 to August 27. The former control house of the bridge’s swing mechanism is now a creative space that the Council manages and is currently offered on short-term residencies.

An auction will be held to sell the prints following the public display, with all funds raised donated to St Mungo’s.

Councillor Estella Tincknell, deputy mayor with responsibility for Culture, said: “The Control Room is a fantastic space for artists in the city to respond to and make work. It is a priority for the Council’s Arts Development team to create opportunities for artists to work in new ways and to share their talents with Bristol audiences.

“Bristol has seen a rise in the numbers of people who are rough sleeping or facing homelessness over the past 12 months. We work closely with St Mungo’s to deliver much needed support and temporary accommodation. The Threshold project will shed a light on the struggles that St Mungo’s service users face and, I hope, raise the profile of the good work the charity does to help these vulnerable people.”
