By Sarski Anderson  Wednesday May 8, 2024

Mike Scrase is a Netherlands-born writer who is based in Bristol. His black and white independent comic, Zip, is set in his adopted home city.

Illustrated by San Espina, the series features lettering by Ferran Delgado, cover art by Vanessa Cardinali and storyboard direction from Matthew Schofield.

Having surpassed its Kickstarter goals and been picked up by UK comic specialist publishers, Markosia, the first two issues of Zip are now available to buy.

Scrase is a visually impaired writer who describes himself as having “dark sensibilities, but not without a sense of humour”. His work explores themes of mental health, disability, and social injustice.

The eponymous hero of Zip is a flawed superhuman who moves at a speed that enables her to fight crime, but prevents her from living a normal life.

In her care lives her ancient ancestor: a genius who achieved immortal life long ago – but at the price of having his mind broken.

Zip shoulders the burden of knowing that the only way to end his suffering is to find a way to kill him: but can it be done? And what if his secret for eternal life should fall into the wrong hands?

To date, the series has garnered praise for its depth of characterisation, world-building and art. Future issues are in the works.
