Bristol Crocodile returns to the docks

By Martin Booth  Thursday Sep 5, 2024

Appearing in an alcove overlooking the Floating Harbour, the Bristol Crocodile now has a commanding view of the goings-on in the docks.

The alcove was formerly part of the cellars of the buildings that used to stand in what is now Castle Park.

And it is an ideal cubbyhole for a crocodile that has entered Bristol folklore since first allegedly being spotted by a bus driver near Bedminster Bridge.

The crocodile is the latest work by Getting Up To Stuff.

It had appeared by sunrise on Thursday morning and was mostly being ignored by oblivious passers-by on nearby Bristol Bridge, which gives the best view of the scaly sculpture whose long tail almost reaches the water.

The anonymous Bristol artist is best-known for his sculpture of a bear at the top of Jacob’s Wells Road and has also created a likeness of Princess Caraboo, a Day of the Dead-themed Catrina next to the partly-demolished Grosvenor Hotel and a protester on College Green.

His ‘Loo Ladies’ sculpture has recently appeared next to the water tower on the Downs and on Sunday he is holding his biggest fundraising event yet at Bath Racecourse featuring a live creation of a temporary art installation. For more information, visit www.justgiving.com/page/giveasheet
