Bristol families in mothering portraits

By Bristol24/7  Monday May 18, 2015

“The egg that made you was an egg inside your mother when she was just a foetus inside your grandmother.”

This is the quote on display next to a stunning new set of portraits capturing generations of mothers and daughters which has gone on show at Southmead Hospital, in the blue zone of the Brunel building, opposite the sanctuary.

The pictures are part of the wider Mother in the Mother art project by Bishopston artist Pippa Robinson, 41, who has collected photos, stories and sculptures around the theme of mothering.

The artist told Bristol24/7 that she first came up with the idea while giving birth at Southmead eight years ago. “I remember being convinced it was a boy, but when I found out it was a girl there was an amazing point when I thought of her giving birth and going through labour, just like me.”
