Most ambitious work yet from unique Bristol artist

By Martin Booth  Monday Apr 4, 2022

There is little doubt that Duncan McKellar is unique in the world of sculpture for choosing to work with foam scaffold pole protectors.

His yellow creations are well-known across Bristol, with one corner of Castle Park alone seeing creations including a banana, a mermaid, a cactus, a pineapple, a phoenix and some stars.

McKellar’s latest work is his most ambitious yet, which he began in the blazing sun and finished on a day which saw snow.

This time it’s both yellow and blue in solidarity with Ukraine, with two hands clasped together in front of the soon-to-be-demolished Norwich Union House.

Hear more from Duncan McKellar on the latest episode of the Bristol24/7 Behind the Headlines podcast:

“This space has become almost like an outdoor studio space for me,” Duncan said.

“It’s quite a privilege to be able to install something in the city centre, and they have really become embraced in a way, become part of the skyline.”
