New Banksy features mountain goat

By Cristina Pinuaga  Monday Aug 5, 2024

An artwork that sits on top of a pillar depicts the silhouette of a mountain goat staring down at the fall below it has garnered attention after it was claimed by Bristol-born street artist Banksy.

There is also falling debris painted below the goat down the side of the pillar, emphasising the precarity of its balance.

Next to the piece, and pointed at the goat, is a CCTV camera, presumed to be part of the artwork as well.

The piece near Kew Bridge in Richmond, south-west London, has already being dubbed ‘the Scapegoat’.

It was officially confirmed to be Banksy’s work after he posted a picture of the mural on his Instagram page.

The mural is the first work from Banksy since his ‘migrant boat’ stirred a lot of controversy.

An inflatable raft depicting refugees travelling on it was crowd surfed during Bristol band Idles’ Glastonbury set.

Before this, Banksy painted a mural of green splashes in north London in March, depicting a tree’s leaves backdropped against a bare tree.

Instagram users have taken to the comment section of the post to share their interpretations and theories of what the latest artwork represents.

One user commented: “The goat represents the human race on the precipice, ‘of the edge of extinction’, the jump is not important better to take a few steps backwards”

Another user said: “Brilliant metaphor. The world is definitely in a precarious situation”
