New gallery and project space opens
A new exhibition, residency and project space has opened on Cheltenham Road.
The project space’s name – At the Laundrette – is an ode to the site’s former owners, Ellen, Cassie and Lily, three sisters who opened At the Well, an innovative cafe and launderette which closed in February this year,
Owned by contemporary Bristol-based artist, Helen Acklam, At the Laundrette will offer residencies to artists in Bristol to explore, experiment and test their work and ideas.

Helen hopes artists will also use the space to collaborate and engage with other artists and the public through workshops and events.

Her website states that the gallery’s development “has depended on an organic process involving participating artists and the wider network of artists and artist-led groups.”
“The fundamental aim is to encourage activities that stimulate generosity and sharing, conversation and thought around the ideas that feed our practices.
There will also be exhibitions in the space, which is currently housing ‘Transatlantic Assets’, an exhibition of contemporary work by artists from Bristol and Los Angeles.
Helen has moved the space over from Clifton, where the project space was called At the Garage. She opened the original space in 2019.
Previous residences and exhibitions included work from Sarah Rhys and Anne-Mie Melis, Silvia Carderelli and Fiona Winning, Jessie Blindell and Mary Flower, and Annabel Pettigrew, Penny Simons and Don Mandarin.
Helen has plans to create an exhibition drawing on the history and themes of the laundrette before her.
