New ‘interactive’ gallery by Watershed

By Karen Johnson  Saturday Oct 26, 2024

Bristol can now experience an “immersive and interactive gallery” in the heart of the city.

Undershed by Watershed has opened with its first exhibition, Sing The Body Electric, curated by Amy Rose, the gallery’s lead curator.

The collections on display resemble games for visitors to play while exploring the deeper meaning of the art.

Vast Body – the first installation to catch anyone’s eye on entering the gallery – lets visitors enter a space, face a screen and move their upper body in any way they like. On the screen, they will see a wave of people reinterpret their gestures and mimic their moves – all in real-time.

Visitors can also create “invisible sculptures” through air and sound waves in an installation by Yeseul Song.

Undershed strives to become a place for people to “come together and explore new forms of storytelling”.

Lead curator, Amy Rose said: “We have built Undershed specially to show interactive and immersive artwork.
The word interactive basically means that you, the audience member, are asked to do something.

“What you’re asked to do is different in every piece – it might mean playing with some images that are being projected on a screen and that react to how you move, or putting on a VR headset and following some instructions.

“Undershed will be full of pieces made by brilliant artists from all over the world who are experimenting with new technologies. We have only chosen artworks that ask you to do something – to get involved – in a fun, interesting and accessible way, and have been made for everybody rather than just people who are into gaming or nerdy new media.

“We hope that the pieces in the collection make sense together – that they sit alongside each other and invite you to think about something in a new and original way.

“Ordinarily, this kind of work just gets shown in festivals – this is one of the first places to start showing it on an ongoing basis, all year round.”

The exhibition which is divided into two collections is now open for visitors till December 22.
