‘Pick It Up!’: Morven Mulgrew’s exhibition at 17 Midland Road features the work of over 30 invited artists

By Sarski Anderson  Monday Jan 20, 2025

In its opening exhibition of 2025, 17 Midland Road is hosting an installation from Scottish artist Morven Mulgrew.

Pick It Up! features a collection of pieces by 20 Scottish artists ‘in conversation’ with work by 20 Bristolian artists.

The results make for a dynamic and exhilarating collaboration – not only between the makers themselves, but between the audience and the works on display, and in their innate “connection between object, food and the body”.

The artists represented include Erica Fudge, Jessica Akerman, Phil Root, Ashley Loxton, Sophie Alda, Grazyna Adrian, Angela Forrest, Rachel L Hodgson, Ciara Appleton and Mariella ceramics.

Central to the ethos of the exhibition is the notion that visitors should be encouraged to pick up and interact with the vessels; intermittently, Mulgrew will be serving drinks directly into them, and people will be directed to wash up their object and re-submit it to the installation after use.

Underpinning this approach is “a framework to allow the audience to explore the objects on display through touch”.

Each of the four exhibition days will be subject to a special event, from the opening performance on Thursday to an afternoon workshop on Friday, a live podcast record on Saturday and a sale of the vessels on Sunday, to close the event.
