Six Bristol artists join forces for a one-off night of live art at The Island

By Sarski Anderson  Friday Oct 7, 2022

In the final weekend of Artspace Openspace 2022, which has programmed events at Arts Mansion and The Vestibules on October 1 and 8 respectively, The Island will be throwing open its doors for an Open Studios weekend on October 14-16.

Amongst the highlights, there will be a tenants’ exhibition, a comedy night, club night, dance classes and open studios.

And on October 15, a unique live art event will bring six resident artists together, combining their eclectic practices in a one-off experimental performance.

So how exactly are they going to be interacting and colliding with one another? Brook Tate describes it as “a bit mash-up performance”.

“Lizzie Stone will be creating large abstract pieces which will then be manipulated by illustrator Tom Bonson,” he explains, “whilst he, Daniel Dewolfe, Holysseus Fly and I will be collaborating musically and transforming into drag personas.

“And to top it off, Alice Dunn Ribeiro will be drawing us and the audience throughout the performance with inks, pastels and paints.”

For DeWolfe, the creative synergy at play on the night – not least the spectacular climax – is a true distillation of what The Island affords the 100 artists based there.

“It’s a space in the middle of the city where you can live out your creativity freely and affordably,” he says, “housing a large spectrum of creatives who all bring their individual energy to the space and make it feel warm, welcoming and exciting.”
