Bristol photographer Chris Hoare’s new photobook highlights inequality in his home city

By Sarski Anderson  Wednesday Sep 20, 2023

Chris Hoare is a homegrown Bristol photographer, set to release his second publication from RRB Photobooks in September 2023.

With text from Bristol author Moses McKenzie, Seven Hills shows the city through the lens of increasing inequality and division, showing issues of race, class and homelessness.

As a local artist who grew up on the edges of Bristol, Hoare has seen the myriad ways in which his hometown has changed in his lifetime.

Shaped by gentrification and its impact on house prices and rents, it is a place in flux, in which swathes of people have been pushed further out as they struggle to afford the escalating cost of living.

Hoare’s work also reflects Bristol in the wake of the toppling of the Colston statue in 2020, when Black Lives Matter protests urged the city to confront and meaningfully respond to its former role in the Transatlantic Slave Trade.

The book interrogates themes with which Hoare is continually fascinated: identity, place, and the corners of society either disregarded, or unseen.
