Immersive audio smartphone adventure tells the untold stories of St Paul’s

By Sarski Anderson  Tuesday Sep 19, 2023

The third in the Ends & Tales series of audio walking adventures from Tamasha theatre company and BAFTA-award-winning game designers Coney, Duppy Hunter: A Locals Guide to St Pauls is coming to Bristol from October 3-29.

The series is underpinned by a desire to uncover the untold histories of our everyday environments, through an experience that blurs the boundaries between walking tour, promenade theatre, and game.

With direction from Hanna Adu-Boateng, this edition was written by Bristol writer and academic, Dr Edson Burton, who created an intergenerational story in response to interviews with local community members. Music and sound design come from Courtney Beckford and Jake Gaule.

Beginning at the Trinity Centre – who have worked in partnership with Tamasha on the project – the magical realist adventure navigates listeners on a real-life journey that lasts between 50-90 minutes, through and around St Pauls.

“Audiences are invited to help fictional character, Josie (played by Nadia Williams – I’m Not Running (2019), Broadchurch (2013)), track down a duppy that has become loose in St Pauls,” say Tamasha in their outline notes to the experience.

“Josie is from a line of obeah women priestesses that have fulfilled the role of duppy hunters, who hunt for duppies that are trying to capture human souls to walk the earth and leave a host open to future possessions. Through helping Josie to solve the riddles the duppy leaves on its trail, the adventure will take audiences past Stapleton Road and Pennywell Road and crossing the Danny, before heading onto to St Pauls.”

Duppy Hunter: A Locals Guide to St Pauls runs from October 3-29. The journey begins at the Trinity Centre, and lasts 50-90 minutes. Tickets are pay what you want, bookable at www.tamasha.org.uk.

Participants are advised to take a pair of headphones, a fully charged phone with at least 1GB of data, and to dress appropriately for the weather.
