‘We strongly believe in using the power of art as a force for good’

By Valentina Hernández Gómez  Wednesday Aug 31, 2022

After the successful summer exhibition, Earth: Digging Deep in British Art, the Royal West of England Academy (RWA) continues to channel climate discussions through art.

The ‘climate cafes’ will take place in its transformed galleries in Queen’s Road, on Saturday, September 3, October 15 and November 26.

These spaces will be an opportunity to collectively share fears and uncertainties about the climate emergency, as well as creating a better understanding about the upcoming and present challenges. The discussion will also invite experts from the Climate Psychology Alliance.

Helen Jacobs, RWA’s head of learning & engagement, said:  “We all need spaces for processing difficult feelings about the ecological emergency and confronting hard truths whilst staying grounded, which is what these climate cafes are for.

“As an arts organisation, we strongly believe in using the power of art as a force for good and these café sessions form part of the range of activities and events we have been running all through the summer to complement our Earth exhibition. We hope participants will leave the sessions feeling a bit less alone in their concerns about the climate crisis.”

The Earth: Digging Deep in British Art 1781 – 2022 will run until September 11, showcasing British artwork, while sparking conversations about the changing soil and environment around it.

After reopening its galleries, the RWA’s building has had significant sustainability improvements, these include the installation of air source heat pumps, reducing its energy demand by 78 per cent and carbon emissions by 76 per cent based on conventional power supply.

The RWA ‘climate cafes’ are free to attend and open to anyone over 18. Find out more or reserve a place via: www.rwa.org.uk/collections/events/products/climate-cafe-1
