Bristol children’s publisher looking for new stories
Have you written a story that would make a great children’s picture book? Does it have a strong, thought-provoking narrative that will appeal to a global audience? If so, Bristol-based children’s publisher Book Island would like to hear from you.
The independent publishing company was founded five years ago in New Zealand by Belgian-born translator and linguist Greet Pauwelijn. The company relocated to Bristol last year.
They have been quietly building a strong reputation for translating imaginative and award-winning picture books from around the globe and publishing them in the English language. Their beautifully illustrated, high-quality titles are now stocked and available from bookshops, gift shops, galleries, libraries and other outlets in more than 20 countries.
is needed now More than ever
Greet explains more about this next stage in their development: “At Book Island we are now ready to create our own titles and share those with the rest of the world. This is a great opportunity for all children’s authors in the UK and particularly for those who are looking for their first picture book to be published”.
She goes on to say: “We’re hoping to receive many well-constructed, thought-provoking stories about strong and independent characters, that will keep both children and adults captivated. A Book Island story doesn’t necessarily need to have a happy ending. What matters most, is that the author writes up, not down, as we believe that the children of today are more attentive, curious, observant, sensitive and quick than ever.”
At this stage Book Island are not looking for illustrations, unless the story and illustrations are created by the same person and are of equal quality.
Before sending in a manuscript, Book Island are urging writers to read the submission guidelines on their website to find out more about what they publish and how to submit.
