Bristol focus in Writers’ & Artists’ Yearbook

By Joanna Papageorgiou  Thursday Jul 2, 2015

Nathan Filer, author of the award-winning Shock of the Fall, is just one of the Bristol authors published in the Writers’ and Artists’ Yearbook 2016

This all-encompassing directory provides resources needed to not only start your work, such as inspiration, but also has comprehensive contact details for agents, publishers, magazines, newspapers and as much media as possible.

Bristol writer, Tania Hershman, who works closely with the Bristol Short Story Prize, was first published in the Yearbook two years ago and updates her piece each year. She offers advice on Writing Short Stories while Filer talks about his own personal journey and provides convincing advice on How to Write an Award-Winning First Novel.

Independent journalism
is needed now More than ever
Keep our city's journalism independent.

“If we’re seeking representation from an agency, we can buy the Writers’ & Artists’ Yearbook; we can be sure to select agents who are accepting work in our genre; we can carefully read submission guidelines and fastidiously adhere to them. These are the things we can control. What we can’t control, is whether or not the agent chooses to represent us, and if our writing gets published.”

There are 4500 listings and the Yearbook provides information on a huge range of topics including copyright, finance, submitting a manuscript, e-publishing, self-publishing, agents, publishers, prizes and awards.”

New articles for 2016 include:

  • Foreword by Rachel Joyce
  • News, views and trends in book publishing – Tom Tivnan
  • On writing: essential advice for writers – Ben Schott
  • The only book you will ever need – Susan Hill
  • Writing historical fiction – Alison Weir
  • Writing about food – Rose Prince
  • Being a travel writer – Sara Wheeler
  • Becoming a published poet – Julia Copus
  • Bringing new life to classic plays – Mike Poulton
  • Electronic publishing – Philip Jones

The Writers’ and Artists’ Yearbook 2016 is published July 2 by Bloomsbury
