Bristol in Books
A group of walkers stood on Clifton’s Royal York Crescent last May, looking up at one of the white terraced buildings and hearing the threats made to a young lawyer from Christopher Wakling’s The Devil’s Mask, as he stood at the top and waited to see if he would be pushed from the half-built building. The speaker was Craig Edwards, a professional actor whose voice brought to life passages from Bristol books.
The literary walk was part of the month-long Walking Festival – and it returns for a second instalment this year. The mystery tour covers a distance of three miles over two hours: last year’s group was led up through Brandon Hill to follow the madness of a windswept and rainy night from Angela Carter’s Love, after a spell on Frogmore Street to imagine the great 1960s music hall The Locarno. Elsewhere, at the concrete Cumberland Piazza under the Cumberland Basin flyover, gazes were directed towards the harbour where a letter from Elizabeth Gregory’s A Respectable Trade was read out.
Bristol in Books provides an insightful journey of discovery, not only around Bristol but also into its many absorbing fictional characters.
