Garth Marenghi’s TerrorTome book tour hits the Hippodrome

By Sarski Anderson  Thursday Dec 15, 2022

Matthew Holness’ cult comedy character Garth Marenghi was made famous by the retrospective success of horror spoof TV series Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace (Channel 4).

Holness co-wrote the show with Richard Ayoade, who appears as Marenghi’s publisher, Dean Learner, and the pair were joined by Matt Berry as actor Todd Rivers (who plays Dr Lucien Sanchez), and Alice Lowe as actor Madeleine Wool (who plays Liz Asher).

All four have gone on to achieve significant TV and film success in the last 20 years, though no further episodes were ever made of the cult hit show beyond the initial six.

However, Holness is now bringing his most beloved character back to the fore, with the publication of an anthology novel, Garth Marenghi’s TerrorTome.

Written in character and bursting with schlocky supernatural parody, it is billed as “three dark tales from his long-lost multi-volume epic”.

An official synopsis on the book explains: “When horror writer Nick Steen gets sucked into a cursed typewriter by the terrifying Typeface, Dark Lord of the Prolix, the hellish visions inside his head are unleashed for real. Forced to fight his escaping imagination – now leaking out of his own brain – Nick must defend the town of Stalkford from his own fictional horrors, including avascular-necrosis-obsessed serial killer Nelson Strain and Nick’s dreaded throppleganger, the Dark Third”.

Due to demand that appears to have far surpassed expectation, the national book tour has been massively extended due to huge demand.

In November, Storysmith presented An Evening with Garth Marenghi at Loco Klub, in which the cult author was in conversation with Stuart Goldsmith, comedian and host of The Comedian’s Comedian Podcast.

Two weeks later, Marenghi appeared again, this time at The Redgrave Theatre. And now, promoters Live Nation have announced a massive extra night at the Bristol Hippodrome (nearly 2,000 capacity) on February 10.
